We’re in total disbelief that our favorite series Pretty Little Liars is coming to an end after seven amazing seasons. We can’t wait to see what directions the liars all end in. But we do know one thing — romance queen Spencer Hastings will end the series very, very single. And the craziest part of all this? It was actually actress Troian Bellisario’s choice! Here’s why she wanted her character to end as a single lady.
In a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Troian opened up about the future of her character in this final season. “[Marlene King] and I both know that Spencer’s modus operandi is for her to jump into a relationship or bury her pain in a hook-up or by abusing substances or something like that, so I was like what if she got sober and was single? What would come up for her, how would she deal with things?” Troian wondered. “Marlene and I spoke about it a lot. I told her I’m starting to get a little bit — not a little bit annoyed, but I’m starting to find that a lot of fans are jsut saying I want you with this guy, I want you with this guy. And I said what if Spencer was just on her own?”
The main reason why Troian wanted her character to end up on her own is because she wanted the fans to feel empowered! “Why don’t we have any characters on the show that are able to be single and be happy? Because otherwise what kind of message are we sending out? Like you have to be with someone, whether it be a man or a woman, in order to find happiness? What if Spencer took some time on her own to figure things out for herself?” Preach, Troian! We love seeing single, independent, happy female characters. PLL sets a great example that you don’t need to be in a relationship to be happy with yourself.
